  • Do you currently smoke or did you smoke in the past?
I ask this question many times over at work; patient after patient. Each time I do ask this question, I can't help but say it in such a tone where, " I told you so!"  Why? Well, they are asking me why they are having a hard time breathing now or why they are in need of oxygen or high doses of oxygen. Dying of any smoker's disease is  a very slow death. Think of it as a slow suffocation in which the only thing you can ido is take medication and hope, yes hope that it will allow your airways to remain patent. Oh! I can't forget the oxygen tanks that you will be carrying around. You may be able to go out with them, but only for a short period of time. Think of it as your "gas tank." If you run out because you overestimated your stay out and your tank runs out, you are in deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep shit! Deep shit! Think of the multiple hospital stays for which you will be kindly themed by the hospital staff as a " frequent flyer." Think of how so sad you will be when you can barely walk 2-3 minutes on a flat surface. You get so short of breath that you are pretty much bed ridden. But, there is help though for this and that is Pulmonary Rehab, but that only maintains your disease, it doesn't cure it. Sorry for the little lecture here on smoking, but it just kills me that so many people smoke, but yet are at our mercy when their smoking finally catches up to them.
